This week, the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee gave unanimous support on two important votes regarding the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS). Susan Hildreth, the IMLS Director nominee, received a vote of approval. The HELP Committee also gave approval to the reauthorization of IMLS (S 3984). Both of these will now go to the full Senate for a vote.
Senator Mikulski serves on the HELP Committee and has shown her support on these issues, so there is no urgent need to contact her.
Please contact Senator Cardin to encourage his support by phone at 202-224-4524 or using Capwiz. (Go to My Elected Officials, Senator Cardin and follow the contact link.)
- Ask him to vote to confirm Susan Hildreth as the Director of IMLS so that IMLS may continue to assist libraries. If she is not confirmed during this session of Congress, the nomination process will need to begin all over again with the next Congress.
- Ask him to vote for the reauthorization of IMLS. It is bill number S 3984. IMLS provides federal support to libraries and includes the Library Services & Technology Act (LSTA).
Thank you for any assistance you can provide!
12/8/2010 Update: The Senate unanimously passed S 3984 on Tuesday, December 7th. Please feel free to contact Senators Cardin and Mikulski to thank them for their support.
