Action Alert! Contact Mikulski to increase LSTA & ILTSL funding

On Tuesday, the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee will vote on funding for the Library Services & Technology Act (LSTA) and Improving Literacy Through School Libraries (ILTSL) program. Apologies for the late request, but there is still time to contact Senator Mikulski, who serves on this subcommittee, and ask for her support. Personalize your message by telling how these funds help you and/or your library. For more information on how LSTA funds are used in Maryland, see this document.

Mikulski did sign a Dear Colleague Letter in support of LSTA and ILSTL funding for FY 2012 in June.  (See the earlier Legislative Panel’s blog post.)  However, this vote will be for specific funding amounts. See the message below from the American Library Association Washington Office for more details, including how to use Twitter to send a message to subcommittee members.

Thanks in advance for any advocacy efforts!

Message from the American Library Association Washington Office:

The U.S. Senate Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee is scheduled to mark up (have a vote on) the FY 2012 appropriations bill the afternoon of Tuesday, September 20.  This is the subcommittee in the Senate that determines that annual funding for the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) and Improving Literacy Through School Libraries.  You are receiving this e-mail because your senator serves on this important subcommittee.  Please call Sen. Mikulski today at 202-224-3121 and tell her to increase funding for the following:

  • LSTA is the primary source of federal funding for libraries and was cut in FY 2011 by 11.4% to $189 million.  ALA is asking Congress to fund LSTA at $232 million which was the level it was authorized at in December 2010.
  • Improving Literacy Through School Libraries, which is a program in the U.S. Department of Education that works to get school libraries up-to-date books and materials, was zeroed out in FY 2011.  ALA is asking that Congress restore funding back to the FY 2010 level of $19.1 million.

When you call your senator, please also reiterate to them what great things libraries do in your community and how cutting funding in these tough economic times would be a mistake.

If you are a Twitter user, we urge you to Tweet the following message at your senator between now and the vote on the Tuesday:

LHHS Markup #fundLSTA @232M. It’s the primary source of fed funding for #libraries http://bit.ly/nCBWla
