USDA awards funds to 129 rural libraries in 30 states

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced in a press release on Friday that libraries in 129 rural communities from 30 states were awarded funding through the Rural Development’s Community Facilities Program, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  The $15 million of funding is supplemented by $10.2 million from other sources.  A combination of grants and loans will be used to build and enhance libraries in a variety of ways, including the renovation and expansion of buildings and the purchase of furniture and equipment.  A complete list of library recipients is also available.  (None of the libraries are in Maryland.)

Maryland receives BTOP grant to expand broadband Internet access

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced on Friday that the Maryland Department of Technology was awarded $115.2 million in stimulus funds in the second round of the Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP).  The funds will be used to built a high-speed infrastructure through all 23 counties and Baltimore City and provide broadband service to many anchor institutions, including schools and libraries.  For more information, please see the press release from the US Department of Commerce.

ALA Advocacy Award

The American Library Association (ALA) has a new Presidential Award for Advocacy sponsored by the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF).  The award is given to a state group that exhibits excellent advocacy efforts measured by a number of criteria, including their use of Capwiz.  The Florida Library Association (FLA) was this year’s recipient for their efforts to reinstate funding in the 11th hour.
