Senator Mikulski named Chair of Appropriations Committee

Late last week, Senator Mikulski was ratified as the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. This is of significance to libraries because the Appropriations Committee writes bills to allocate funding to many agencies and programs, including Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funding and funds for school libraries.

In her remarks on the Senate floor, Mikulski stated that she intends to work with all members of the Senate to meet our national security needs, as well as our human needs, specifically mentioning education and the economy.

Feel free to use Capwiz to send a brief congratulations message to Senator Mikulski. You are encouraged to thank her for her past support of libraries and mention how your library helps to meet human needs.

For more information, including Mikulski’s complete remarks, please see her press release.

Action Alert! Include Public Libraries in Workforce Investment Act!

Many public libraries are already assisting job seekers in a variety of ways.  We now have an opportunity to include public libraries in the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) when it is reauthorized.  This would allow public libraries to benefit from WIA funding and collaborative opportunities.  The Senate Heath, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee will be introducing this bill on Wednesday and Senator Mikulski serves on this committee.  To get public libraries included in the reauthorization bill, contact Senator Mikulski’s office at 202-224-4654 by 5pm on Tuesday, June 21st and ask for her to include public libraries in the WIA Reauthorization.  Additional details are available in the Capwiz Action Alert.   Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide!
