Action Alert! Include Public Libraries in Workforce Investment Act!

Many public libraries are already assisting job seekers in a variety of ways.  We now have an opportunity to include public libraries in the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) when it is reauthorized.  This would allow public libraries to benefit from WIA funding and collaborative opportunities.  The Senate Heath, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee will be introducing this bill on Wednesday and Senator Mikulski serves on this committee.  To get public libraries included in the reauthorization bill, contact Senator Mikulski’s office at 202-224-4654 by 5pm on Tuesday, June 21st and ask for her to include public libraries in the WIA Reauthorization.  Additional details are available in the Capwiz Action Alert.   Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide!

Senate Committee approves amended PATRIOT Act

On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill, the USA PATRIOT Act Sunset Extension Act of 2011 (S 193), to reauthorize three provisions of the PATRIOT Act, including Section 215, the “library provision.”  The amendment requires that the government show a connection to terrorism or espionage before obtaining library or bookstore records.  Additionally, the National Security Letters will have a sunset.

The bill will now move to the Senate floor.  The current extension expires on May 27, 2011.

For more information, please see the District Dispatch posting.

Museum & Library Services Act passes in House, moves on to President

On Tuesday, the House passed the Museum & Library Services Act (MLSA), S 3984, by a voice vote.  It is now on its way to the President, who is expected to sign it into law.  This means that the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) will be able to continue its work and the Library Services & Technology Act (LSTA) will remain funded at the current authorization levels.  For more details, see the District Dispatch posting.

Thank you to everyone who contacted legislators asking for their support.  Please feel free to contact legislators to say thank you either by phone or using Capwiz.

Thank you to everyone who has already contacted their Representative.  If you have not yet done so, see the earlier blog posting for more details and information on contacting your Representative by phone or e-mail.

Action Alert! Ask Senator Cardin to support IMLS

This week, the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee gave unanimous support on two important votes regarding the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS).  Susan Hildreth, the IMLS Director nominee, received a vote of approval.  The HELP Committee also gave approval to the reauthorization of IMLS (S 3984).  Both of these will now go to the full Senate for a vote.

Senator Mikulski serves on the HELP Committee and has shown her support on these issues, so there is no urgent need to contact her.

Please contact Senator Cardin to encourage his support by phone at 202-224-4524 or using Capwiz.  (Go to My Elected Officials, Senator Cardin and follow the contact link.)

  • Ask him to vote to confirm Susan Hildreth as the Director of IMLS so that IMLS may continue to assist libraries.  If she is not confirmed during this session of Congress, the nomination process will need to begin all over again with the next Congress.
  • Ask him to vote for the reauthorization of IMLS.  It is bill number S 3984.  IMLS provides federal support to libraries and includes the Library Services & Technology Act (LSTA).

Thank you for any assistance you can provide!

12/8/2010 Update:  The Senate unanimously passed S 3984 on Tuesday, December 7th.  Please feel free to contact Senators Cardin and Mikulski to thank them for their support.
